Driving licences and learning disorders: which exam aids can you request?
Candidates with specific learning disorders can request audio questions and extra time for the theory test, with supporting documentation.
The Ministry provides audio questions and ten extra minutes for the theory test for candidates diagnosed with specific learning disorders (DSA). The certificate must be presented at the fitness assessment, and the request should be coordinated with the Motor Vehicle Office (UMC).
Measures provided by the Ministry
For candidates with specific learning disorders, the Ministry provides accommodations during the theory test: a computer-based quiz with audio support and ten minutes more than the standard time set by the Ministry. These measures concern reading the questions and the time allowed; they do not change the exam syllabus or lower the pass standard.
The ministerial decree refers to diagnostic certification under Law 170/2010. Candidates present it at the medical assessment of their physical and mental fitness, so the certificate and application can include the necessary information. Do not wait until exam day: ask the authorised doctor and Motor Vehicle Office how to submit the documents and make sure audio support is arranged.
How to request the accommodation
Before your appointment, prepare the diagnosis and check that it is complete and meets the required criteria. Ask the doctor which documents to attach and how to record your need for accommodations. Then contact the Motor Vehicle Office or driving school to ask how to book and whether the test centre uses an audio file or another authorised procedure.
In the past, the Ministry described a temporary oral procedure while audio technology was being made available. Do not assume that your test centre still uses it: current rules and the office’s arrangements apply. Keep a copy of your request and ask for confirmation that it has been added to your application.
Preparing with accessibility in mind
Practise with spoken questions when that matches the authorised test format, and get familiar with technical terms. Audio support reduces the reading load but does not replace understanding the rules. Alternate chapters, listening and quizzes, and plan breaks during study sessions if you need them.
If you have a specific learning disorder and also need to take a CQC exam, the Ministry provides extra time and aids for that test, with measures that vary by module. Check the CQC procedure separately: accommodations for the driving licence test do not automatically carry over to another exam.
On exam day
Bring valid identification and follow the exam notice. If the audio does not work or an approved accommodation is unavailable, tell the staff before starting and ask what to do; do not begin under different conditions without clarifying the instructions. Share a diagnosis only with the offices and professionals who need it.
