Requirements
Dog in the car: how to travel without interfering with driving
Secure the dog so it cannot obstruct or endanger the driver; multiple animals must be carried using the arrangements specified by law.
Article 169 permits one domestic animal if it does not obstruct or endanger driving; multiple animals must be kept in a cage or container, or separated from the driver by a net or suitable partition.
The animal must not interfere with the driver
The Code does not allow a dog to move freely through the cabin if it could obstruct the driver or create danger. Article 169 permits one domestic animal when it is secured in a way that does not interfere with or endanger driving. A pet may seem calm at the start, but a sudden stop, turn or fright can move it towards the driver or controls.
For multiple animals, the law specifies a cage or container, or a rear compartment separated by a net or another suitable means. The arrangement must keep animals away from the driving position. A loose dog on the front seat or on the driver's lap does not meet that purpose; use a carrier or a stable separation suited to the vehicle.
Prepare the cabin before the trip
Familiarise the dog with its carrier and secure the carrier so it cannot slide during travel. If you use the rear compartment, check that the net or barrier is stable and does not block the driver's view. Do not place the dog where it can operate the gear lever, handbrake or other controls. Take breaks when the animal needs them, but only in safe locations.
For one dog, the law focuses on preventing interference or danger; for multiple animals, it specifies a container or separated rear compartment. Belts and commercial restraints may help stabilise an animal, but they do not replace the need to keep it from interfering with driving.
