How long does it take to get a category B driving licence?

Legal deadlines are set, but your personal timeline depends on tests, study, driving lessons and UMC availability.

For category B, you have six months and two attempts to pass the theory test; the learner's permit lasts 12 months and allows three practical tests within the first 11 months. The actual time depends on appointments and preparation.

Deadlines and actual timing are different

Several schedules affect how long the process takes. For category B, the MIT sets time windows and the number of attempts available for the theory and practical tests: check the current information sheet when you apply, because some deadlines start from the application date. After passing the theory test, your learner's permit lets you practise for a set period; during that window, you need to prepare and book the practical test. These are administrative limits, not a promise that you can get a test within a particular number of weeks.

Actual waiting times vary with UMC appointments, complete paperwork, doctor availability, lesson schedules and the candidate's preparation. One province may offer more test sessions, while another may have a longer wait. A medical certificate that requires further assessment or a repeat test can also change the schedule. For a realistic estimate, call the relevant office and ask for the earliest available dates for the application and tests, explaining whether you are applying as a private candidate or through a driving school.

Plan backwards from the expiry date

When you receive a receipt, test notice or learner's permit, note its issue and expiry dates. Set a reminder well in advance to check which tests you can still book and what practice is required. If your application is close to expiry, contact the UMC before booking: do not assume a renewal, new application or transitional arrangement will apply. If the office's delay is the cause, ask which tests and documents remain valid and whether you need written confirmation.

To avoid wasting time, study by topic while arranging your medical examination and paperwork. Alternate study with practice tests, then schedule driving lessons around actual availability. For a standard category B licence, the MIT currently requires at least six certified hours of driving practice; Ministerial Decree 294/2025 provides for eight hours and new digital certification, but its entry into force depends on the implementing Director's Decree for the platform. Ask the UMC which rule applies to the date on your learner's permit and schedule lessons accordingly. The practical goal is to leave enough time before deadlines, not to chase an average duration with no reliable basis.

Questions to ask the UMC

  • What are the next available dates for the theory and practical tests?
  • From which date does the deadline for my application run?
  • What should I do if my learner's permit expires while I am waiting?

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my driving licence in a month?

It may be possible if you pass the tests first time and appointments are available, but it is not guaranteed. The law allows two theory attempts within the first six months and, after passing, up to three practical attempts within the following 11 months.

Is a category B learner's permit renewed automatically?

No. A category B learner's permit is valid for 12 months. If you do not complete the tests, in some cases you can ask for the theory test you passed to be carried over to a new permit once, subject to MIT conditions; otherwise, you must submit a new application and retake the theory test.
