Overtaking a bicycle: how much side clearance should you leave?

Overtake only with adequate space and safety; where road conditions allow, the Code requires at least 1.5 metres.

Article 148 requires adequate lateral clearance when overtaking a bicycle; where road conditions allow, a safety distance of at least 1.5 metres must be maintained.

Clearance depends on the conditions too

When overtaking a bicycle, leave lateral space suited to the relative speeds and the size of your vehicle, taking the cyclist's reduced stability into account. The updated article 148 specifies a safety distance of at least 1.5 metres where road conditions allow. This does not mean you should overtake in every situation: the manoeuvre is possible only with sufficient visibility, space and time and without forcing the cyclist to move.

A wide, clear road may allow that margin; a narrow lane, oncoming traffic or a blind bend may make it impossible. In that case slow down and wait instead of squeezing the cyclist against the edge or passing at high speed. Consider crosswinds, potholes and sudden movements too. Keep the margin through the entire pass, not only when your vehicle is alongside the bicycle.

Complete the manoeuvre safely

Before moving out, check mirrors, signal and oncoming traffic. If you cannot leave the required space without entering an unavailable area or creating danger, stay back at a safe distance and wait for a suitable stretch. After passing, return to your lane without cutting across the cyclist's path or braking sharply in front of them.

For example, if a vehicle approaches in the opposite direction on a narrow road, keep your distance from the bicycle and wait until it has passed; do not sacrifice the 1.5-metre safety margin just to finish quickly. The legal wording relates the distance to conditions, while still requiring caution and adequate clearance.
