Motorway: are reversing and turning around always prohibited?
Reversing and turning around are prohibited on motorway carriageways, ramps and access roads, even if you miss your exit.
Article 176 prohibits reversing and turning around on motorway carriageways, ramps and access roads. If you miss an exit, continue to the next junction.
The ban covers carriageways, ramps and access roads
On motorways and roads to which articles 175 and 176 apply, drivers may not reverse or turn around on the carriageway, ramps or access roads. The ban does not depend on traffic levels: an empty road or good visibility does not make the manoeuvre safe or permitted. Access roads include the entry and exit stretches that connect with the ordinary road network.
If you pass your exit, continue to the next junction and recalculate your route. Do not stop in a traffic lane to correct direction, reverse along a deceleration lane or cross the carriageways. If you miss an exit on an urban route called a tangenziale, still check the classification and signs: the rules cannot be inferred from the road’s name.
A navigation mistake does not justify a prohibited manoeuvre
Ramps can have curves, limited visibility and vehicles entering or leaving at different speeds. Reversing can surprise approaching drivers and turn a navigation mistake into a serious danger. If you miss an exit, the safe and lawful solution is to continue and use another junction.
Set your destination before departure. If an instruction arrives too late, avoid sudden braking or a sharp lane change; continue and let navigation recalculate. If an emergency forces you to stop, follow the rules for stopping and requesting help without using the stop as a reason to turn around.
