How to study
Driving theory test anxiety: how to feel prepared
A realistic routine can help you manage nerves: practice tests, sleep, documents and careful reading of each statement.
Feeling anxious before the test is common. Organise your study and logistics, practise in the official format, and use simple strategies to stay focused.
Reduce uncertainty before test day
Some anxiety comes from not knowing what will happen. In the days beforehand, check your test notice, identity document, time and venue address. If you need assistive measures, confirm that your documentation has been accepted and the arrangements approved. For the standard category B test, practise the current format of 30 true-or-false statements in 20 minutes, not outdated papers. Knowing how the process works leaves more attention for the questions.
Spread your study over manageable sessions: one chapter, focused quizzes, review of mistakes, then a full practice test. In the days before the exam, take only as many tests as you can properly review; doing tests without understanding your mistakes can make things feel more confusing. Make a short list of concepts to revisit and finish with a review, rather than trying to cover the whole syllabus in one night. Regular sleep and a familiar breakfast can help you stay focused, but they do not guarantee a result.
During the test
Before you begin, listen to the instructions and take a slow breath. Read each statement to the end and focus on its overall meaning, not on a familiar-sounding word. If you are unsure about a question, choose the answer that matches the rule you studied and move on; return to it in the review screen if time allows. There is one timer for the whole paper, so do not spend too long reconstructing a question once you have a reliable way to decide.
If your anxiety becomes intense or seriously interferes with studying, talk to someone you trust or a healthcare professional. Do not try clinical techniques or take medication for the test without medical advice. If the result is not what you hoped for, it does not define your worth: check with the UMC (Civil Motorization Office) how many attempts remain and ask your instructor which topics need more work. A new date, planned with enough time to prepare, may be more useful than taking the test again immediately without addressing the difficulties.
The evening before
- Put your test notice and documents somewhere easy to reach.
- Do a short, focused review, then stop studying at a reasonable time.
- Plan your route and allow extra time for possible delays.

Frequently asked questions
Can I stop the timer if I get anxious during the theory test?
The test has a fixed overall duration, and the timer does not stop for a personal break. Ask the UMC in advance what official support is available for your situation.
Should I do lots of practice tests the day before?
A short review that you can properly correct is better. Practice tests without reviewing mistakes can add confusion without improving understanding.
