Theory test
How many mistakes are allowed in the driving theory test?
For the standard category B theory test, the limit is three mistakes out of 30 statements: check your category and the rules for your specific test.
The computer-based theory test for categories A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE is passed with no more than three mistakes. Other exams may use different formats.
The threshold for the category B test
For the theory test for categories A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE, the MIT circular of 14 December 2021 sets 30 true-or-false statements, 20 minutes and a maximum of three incorrect answers. With four mistakes, you fail. This threshold was updated from the old format, which had 40 questions and allowed up to four mistakes; that is why many outdated pages may give the wrong figure. Check the category on your application and the UMC (Civil Motorization Office) notice, especially if you are not taking the standard category B test.
The number of mistakes does not mean you can get any three questions wrong without understanding them: your overall result depends on the test sheet you are given. When practising, record mistakes by topic and review the rule that explains them. If the same statement catches you out several times, try rephrasing it in your own words and identify the conditions (for example, who, where or when) that make it true or false. A consistent score in practice tests is a sign of preparation, not a guarantee of the official result.
Different tests require care
Professional and boating licences, as well as licence revision exams, may have different test sheets, time limits and thresholds. Do not automatically apply the category B test limit to CQC, CAP or a boating licence. Candidates with certified specific learning disorders (DSA) may also be entitled to compensatory measures governed by a specific decree; they must submit the certification and agree the arrangements with the office before the exam. The MIT circular on the category B test refers to the rules for eligible candidates, but the practical arrangements must be confirmed with the Motorization Office.
To avoid worrying about the count during a practice test, train yourself to answer every question with time left to check your work. In the exam, do not fixate on how many answers you think you got wrong: keep concentrating through the final statement and review uncertain answers in the summary. Leaving an answer blank is not a fallback strategy. If you fail, ask the UMC when you can take the test again and how many attempts remain within the validity period of your application; do not rely on calculations based on someone else’s case.
A quick check
- Check that your application is for a standard category B licence.
- Use the three-mistake limit only for the format covered by the circular.
- For DSA or other categories, ask the UMC about the exact conditions.
