How to book a medical examination or test at the Motorization Office

Booking channels for examinations and tests, digital access, and what to check with your local UMC.

Booking may require access to the Portale dell’Automobilista and varies by procedure and office. Distinguish an appointment, an accepted application and a confirmed test session.

Choose the right service

Before opening the Portale, identify the service you need: a medical examination, theory test, practical test, licence exchange or document submission may each use a different process. An appointment to submit an application is not the same as booking a test, and a draft request does not prove a session has been scheduled. Check the MIT page for your procedure and the notices published by your UMC.

Offices may manage access through online bookings, counters or local channels. SPID or CIE authentication may be required for specific digital services, but not every office or procedure works the same way. Follow the exact entry in the Portale and check that you have selected the right office before sending documents.

The procedure on the Portale

Sign in to the Portale dell’Automobilista using its official link and look for the service associated with your procedure. Check that the province, office and type of transaction are correct; enter details exactly as they appear on your document and complete the requested steps. If a calendar appears, keep the confirmation with the date, time and booking code. If no slots are available, check the office notices and do not create multiple appointments to get around the system.

To book a test, your application may need to have been submitted and remain valid, payments must be recorded, and the required time may need to have passed since the learner’s permit was issued. A practical test may also require you to specify the vehicle. If the system shows an error, note what appears on screen and contact Portale support or the office through the listed channels; do not pay unofficial services.

Prepare for the appointment

Prepare an identity document, application number, PagoPA receipts and your existing licence, where relevant. Check whether the office requires originals, copies or an authorisation. Arrive with reasonable time to spare and bring the confirmation in a format you can access offline. For a medical examination, check the requirements and health documents; for a test, check the vehicle and learner’s permit conditions.

If you need to change the appointment, use the official cancellation or change function and keep the new confirmation. Failing to attend may affect attempts or payments under the applicable procedure. Ask the office before assuming that a receipt can be used again.

If you cannot access online services

Check your local Motorization Office notices for alternatives to SPID or CIE. A driving school or authorised representative may handle some bookings, but make sure you know which procedure they are submitting for you. Do not hand over your personal login details: use a formal authorisation when required and ask for proof of the booking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need SPID to book at the Motorization Office?

No. The channel depends on the procedure and the office’s current instructions.

Does an appointment confirm my test?

Only if the confirmation expressly identifies a test session. An appointment for an application and booking the test are separate steps.
