Getting your licence
How to get a driving licence in Italy: every step
From application to licence: the process, documents and what to check at each stage.
For a category B licence, apply and complete a medical examination from age 18, pass a 30-question theory test within six months, then receive a learner’s permit: you have three practical test attempts within eleven months.
From application to learner’s permit
For a category B licence, you can apply from the day after your 18th birthday. You need form TT2112, an identity document, tax code or health card, a medical examination receipt and PagoPA payment receipts. The digitised medical certificate must be used within three months of a single-doctor examination or six months of an examination by the local medical commission. You can apply at the Motorization Office or through a driving school.
The category B theory test is computer-based: 30 true/false statements, 20 minutes and a maximum of three mistakes. You have two attempts within six months of applying. After you pass, you receive a learner’s permit valid for 12 months; you can take three practical tests within the eleven months starting in the month after the theory test. You must wait at least one month after the permit is issued before taking the first practical test.
From practical test to licence
For a standard category B licence, the MIT currently requires at least six certified hours with an instructor, including night driving and driving on a motorway or main extra-urban road. Ministerial Decree 294/2025 introduces eight hours, but the new rules take effect when the implementing platform decree is issued; the MIT category B page still lists six hours. Keep the certificate showing which set of rules applies to your authorisation.
In the practical test, the examiner checks your skills and behaviour for the category and test conditions. After you pass, the licence is issued; collection and processing times depend on the office. If you fail, check your learner’s permit to see how many attempts remain and when you must book by. Keep your application, payments, certificate, results and training certificates together so you can respond quickly to document requests. For categories other than B, follow the relevant MIT page: theory, practical tests and requirements are not interchangeable.
A useful checklist
- Choose a category and check the age and requirements on its MIT page.
- Confirm with your doctor and UMC which documents you need.
- Keep dates, deadlines, results and receipts in one reminder.
- Check the required practice before booking your practical test.

How long does the whole process take?
For category B, you have six months from applying to pass the theory test. After you receive the learner’s permit, it is valid for 12 months and the three practical attempts must fall within the eleven months counted from the month after the theory test.
