Tram right of way: who goes first at an intersection?

Who goes first when a tram reaches your intersection? Learn the general rule, its exceptions and how to read the theory question.

At a crossing with a tram, other drivers generally give way to the vehicle on rails. Check the signs and the traffic officer: they can regulate the junction differently. A tram must also obey signs that require it to give way.

The general rule for vehicles on rails

The Highway Code says drivers must give way to vehicles travelling on rails at railway and tramway crossings, unless signs say otherwise. If a tram is crossing your path, do not enter the junction as though the rule were only “give way to traffic from the right”.

Always read the signs at that intersection. A traffic light, a specific priority sign or an officer’s instructions may regulate the traffic. The Code also says that drivers of vehicles on rails must obey signs that require them to give way.

Three checks before you cross

To work through the situation, check in this order: follow the officer, if one is directing traffic; read the traffic light and right-of-way signs; then consider the paths of the vehicles. If there is no instruction that changes the order and the tram is crossing your road, wait for it to pass. Do not stop on the tracks while waiting for other vehicles.

For example, you reach a give-way sign and a tram is crossing the junction. Let the tram pass, then check the intersection again before moving. If an officer tells you to stop or proceed, follow that instruction.

Avoid the common theory-test mistake

The answer is not “the tram always goes first”. The words “unless signs say otherwise” matter: signs, lights or an officer may set a different order, and the tram must obey a negative right-of-way sign. Read the diagram and identify the sign that applies to each vehicle.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you practise true-or-false questions and intersection scenarios, linking your answer to the rule instead of memorising an absolute statement.

If you are preparing for the theory test, Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you practise right-of-way questions and tram intersections, with explanations for your answers.

Frequently asked questions

Does a tram always have priority?

At crossings it generally has priority unless signs say otherwise. Trams must also obey signs that require them to give way.

Does the rule for traffic coming from the right still apply?

The general rule applies unless signs say otherwise. The Highway Code gives vehicles on rails priority at crossings, unless a different signal applies.
