How to book the driving theory test as a private candidate

Submit your application and payments, then book the theory test through the channel specified by your Motor Vehicle Office.

A private candidate books the quiz after submitting a valid application and completing the required steps. Booking channels and availability depend on the local Motor Vehicle Office.

Submit your application first

You book the theory test after applying for your licence. For a category B licence, a private candidate prepares form TT2112, identification, tax code, medical certificate and PagoPA receipts, as specified in the current Ministry instructions. Submit the application to the Motor Vehicle Office using the method required by that office. Having a Portal account or a saved draft does not mean your application has been accepted.

Once the office has registered your application, ask whether you must book the test through the Portal, at the counter or through another channel. Offices may have their own calendars and instructions. Use the official service and check that the province, category and test type are correct before confirming.

Complete the booking

Follow the Portal steps and choose the first available session that matches your application requirements. If a payment is required, use the fee code and amount shown for the current procedure. When finished, save or print the confirmation showing the date, time, location and reference number. Make sure the receipt has been linked to your application before treating the booking as complete.

If no dates appear, check the Motor Vehicle Office notices and contact Portal support using the official contact details. Do not give your SPID credentials or password to anyone to get an earlier date. If a family member or driving school books for you, use a proxy when required and ask for the full confirmation.

What to bring on test day

Bring valid identification, your confirmation and any other items listed in the exam notice. Arrive early for identity checks and leave devices or materials that are not allowed in the exam room at home. If you are entitled to accommodations for DSA, check in advance that your documents are on file and the approved format is available.

If you cannot attend, contact the office straight away to ask how to cancel or rebook. Missing the test may affect deadlines or attempts; do not assume it will be rescheduled automatically. Keep messages and receipts as evidence of your request.

After the test

Check your result through the specified channel and note how many attempts remain and when your application expires. If you pass the quiz, wait for your learner’s permit to be issued before starting practice. If you do not pass, book again within the applicable period and review the topics you got wrong.
