Licence points: when do you receive the no-offence bonus?

After two years without a points deduction, your balance may increase or return to 20 depending on how many points you have.

After two years without an offence that deducts points, drivers with at least 20 points automatically receive two points, up to 30; drivers with more than zero but fewer than 20 return to 20. New drivers also have a separate annual bonus during their first three years.

The two-year bonus depends on your balance

MIT grants an automatic bonus after every two years without an offence that deducts points. If your balance is at least 20, two points are added, up to a maximum of 30. If your balance is above zero but below 20, it is restored to 20 instead; two points are not simply added to the reduced total.

For example, a driver with 24 points who completes two years without a points deduction reaches 26; a driver with 16 returns to 20. A balance already at 30 cannot exceed the cap. The period is based on offences that cause a deduction, not every traffic notice or violation that does not remove points. The bonus is automatic under the Ministry’s rules, but the records must be updated in the system.

The new-driver bonus is a different rule

During the first three years, MIT provides new drivers with one additional point for each year without an offence that causes a deduction, up to a maximum of three points. This yearly credit is separate from the two-year bonus: it does not replace the restoration to 20 for drivers who have lost points, and it cannot raise the total above 30.

If you expect a credit that is not shown, check the balance in the Portale dell’Automobilista or ask the Motorizzazione to review it. For an error involving a particular deduction, MIT says to contact the police authority that entered the notice. Keep relevant dates and correspondence. A notice that is not yet final may not appear immediately; the calculation depends on the official record and outcome of the proceedings. Do not make driving decisions based on an assumed bonus: check the current official balance.

You can review road rules with Quiz Patente Ufficiale: chapter study, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. Check your personal balance and credits in the Portale dell’Automobilista or with MIT.
