How much does it cost to retake a driving test?

For the category B practical test, the Ministry lists a €16 N019 fee. Find out when it is due and what extra school or vehicle costs may apply.

The public N019 fee for the category B practical test is €16. The test vehicle, accompaniment and extra lessons are privately priced; after a failed test, check your Motor Vehicle Office’s instructions before paying the fee again.

Separate the different costs

For booking the category B practical test, the Ministry lists fee N019 at €16. This is the public fee for the test application, not the price of lessons or the car. After a failed first attempt or a no-show, offices may say whether the payment already made remains valid. For example, a notice from the Oristano Motor Vehicle Office on the Driver Portal says N019 does not have to be paid again after the first failed or missed attempt. Check your own office’s notice before paying again.

Start with the Ministry page for your category and find the payment for the test you need to retake. Generate an up-to-date PagoPA receipt for that specific procedure; do not reuse the receipt from your first booking without confirmation. If you are a private candidate, ask the Motor Vehicle Office whether another payment is required and how it should be linked to your application.

Ask for a clear quote

If you need a driving school to provide a vehicle for the practical test, ask for separate prices for use of the vehicle, accompaniment, booking and any lessons. Check whether the price includes taxes or payments to the Portal. Also ask what happens if the office postpones the test or you are ill, and whether the cost can be refunded.

For a theory test, the vehicle is not a cost, though there may be administrative or service fees. For categories such as C, D or BE, practical test vehicles have different requirements and availability; a school may charge its own rate. Compare offers only after separating mandatory costs from optional services.

Before you pay

Failing the first test or not attending does not use up one of the three category B practical attempts. The Oristano Motor Vehicle Office’s instructions set a waiting period of at least 13 days after a no-show and one month after a failed result. For category B, the Ministry says the three practical attempts must be completed within eleven months from the month after passing the theory test; book within that window and do not pay N019 again until your office confirms it is due.

Do not confuse retaking a test with reopening an expired application. If your learner’s permit has expired, you may need a new application or to carry over the theory result, under different conditions and fees. Check your status first: paying for another session without a valid authorisation will not book it properly.

Planning your next attempt

After a failed test, read the result and ask your driving school what to improve. Choose targeted lessons based on the mistakes observed instead of automatically buying another package. Check how many attempts remain and when your learner’s permit expires, then book with the office within the official deadlines.
