Driving test
Motorcycle test: what happens in the off-road area and on the road
The A-category test assesses motorcycle control, manoeuvres and road riding; the setup and requirements depend on the category.
The motorcycle practical test checks riding skills and behaviour. The course, vehicle and protective clothing are subject to specific requirements.
Two parts to prepare for
For categories A1, A2 and A, the practical test first checks vehicle control in a closed area, then riding in traffic. The skills test includes balance and manoeuvring exercises under the course and criteria set by the Ministry; on the road, the examiner assesses observation, compliance with signs, choice of line and safe behaviour. Do not assume every test centre follows the same order or setup: the course must meet current requirements, and the office may organise the session according to its own procedures.
The motorcycle used must match the category applied for and meet its power, engine capacity and power-to-weight requirements. Taking the test on an automatic vehicle or in a particular configuration may result in restrictions being recorded on your licence. Ask the driving school which motorcycle will be used and check that it matches the qualification you want. Required protective gear must be complete and suitable; ask in advance which items are mandatory and which the school provides.
Practice and safety
In the practice area, work with an instructor on starting, braking, slalom, obstacle avoidance and low-speed control, following your category’s syllabus. Do not set up an improvised course in an area open to traffic: the space must be safe and authorised. On the road, practise looking ahead, positioning, distance and communicating with other road users. Keep your technique controlled; speeding up to finish quickly can hurt your balance and will not help your assessment.
A1, A2 and A also differ in minimum age, vehicle and possible progressive access. The Ministry publishes the procedures for each category, and the decree governing practical tests sets the technical requirements. If you already hold a lower category, ask the Motor Vehicle Office whether you can qualify by test or through an available progression route, and which test you must take. Bring a compliant helmet and protective gear, your documents and exam notice; if rain or a fault causes a postponement, ask the office how the test will be rescheduled.
Before exam day
- Confirm the category, the motorcycle’s engine capacity and power, and its transmission code.
- Check which helmet and protective gear the test centre requires.
- Practise the course with your instructor before attempting the official test route.

Frequently asked questions
Is the motorcycle test held only in a practice area?
No. It includes skills checks and riding in traffic, according to the requirements for the category.
Will taking the test on an automatic scooter restrict my licence?
The type of transmission may result in code 78. Ask the school which vehicle you will use and which code will be recorded.
