When should you have the medical exam before applying for a licence?

Plan the medical visit and filing date together: MIT sets a three- or six-month window depending on who performs the assessment.

For a licence application, schedule the medical visit so its receipt is still valid when you file. MIT says the receipt must be dated within the previous three months for a single-doctor visit and six months for a Local Medical Commission visit; check the procedure and the receipt for your case.

Calculate the validity window

A medical-fitness assessment is one of the documents required for a licence application. On its B licence page, MIT says a receipt from a single doctor must be no more than three months old; for an assessment by the Local Medical Commission, the stated window is six months. This refers to the visit date and when you submit the application. Do not confuse the document’s filing validity with the length of any licence that may later be issued.

For example, if you plan to file on 20 June, check whether a single-doctor visit falls within the preceding three months; for a CML visit, the Ministry’s reference is six months. Do not book the visit far in advance just because an appointment is available, especially if other documents are still missing. Ask the UMC how to calculate a deadline if your notice gives a different date or your certificate requires further assessment.

Coordinate the doctor and motorisation office

Before booking, check which doctors are authorised and whether your situation requires the CML. The commission handles specified clinical conditions that may raise doubts, special licences and certain categories or age cases. If referred to the CML, plan filing around the actual appointment and certificate date; a booking confirmation does not replace the medical receipt.

Prepare the photo, identity document, tax code and payments required for the application as well. If the receipt may fall outside its validity window before you can file, ask the UMC or doctor whether the visit must be repeated; do not decide alone or pay for a second visit without checking. The date to file and the validity of other documents are separate matters. You can continue theory review in the app while arranging appointments, but studying does not extend the certificate’s validity.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps prepare for B theory with chapter-based study, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and personal statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Is a medical receipt always valid for six months?

No. MIT lists three months for a single-doctor visit and six months for a CML visit. Check which provider assessed you.

Can I have the visit long before applying?

You can book it, but make sure the receipt remains within its validity window when you file. Confirm timing with the UMC.
