The driving theory test for non-native Italian speakers
How to prepare for Italian quiz terminology and which accessibility measures to ask about before the test.
The theory test follows the language, format and rules officially published by the Ministry. Non-native speakers can study road terminology and ask the Motor Vehicle Office which accommodations are available.
Check the language and test format
The standard theory test is in Italian. The Driver Portal publishes official quizzes in French and German as well, for protected language groups; request the language you need when booking. English and other languages are not official quiz options. Study Italian road signs and right-of-way terms, because you will need to apply the rules when reading documents and signs in Italy.
Technical vocabulary can be difficult even if you know everyday Italian well. Words such as carriageway, right of way, overtaking, trailer and weight have specific meanings. Build a glossary with a simple definition and an example road situation for each term. Ask your instructor to check the meaning, not just the pronunciation.
Study comprehension and rules together
When you come across a long sentence, break it into subject, verb and condition. Look for negatives, quantity words, and references to a sign or type of road. Then, if it helps, restate the rule briefly in your own language, while keeping the Italian terms you will see in the quiz.
Do not translate word for word with an automatic system: an everyday translation of a technical term can be misleading. Check your glossary with an instructor and the official material for your category. If a question seems ambiguous, raise the issue and ask for an explanation instead of memorising a translation that may change the meaning.
Preparing for the test
Build up gradually: start with chapters and unfamiliar words, then short quizzes, and finally full tests. Use a timer only once you know the basic vocabulary; otherwise, your score will mostly measure reading comprehension. Review wrong answers and note which term caused difficulty.
Booking and documents follow the standard driving licence procedure. Check the Ministry page for your category and ask the Motor Vehicle Office whether your circumstances require a certificate or specific accommodation. If you have questions about the language or test format, ask the office before booking.
Ask for support before exam day
If you have reading difficulties or a diagnosed condition, mention it during the medical assessment and before booking so you can find out which accommodations are available. Do not assume that measures for DSA automatically apply to other needs. Bring the required certificates and ask which procedure your test centre follows.
