Driving licence: what to do when personal details do not match
If names, dates or other details differ across documents, bring official evidence explaining the change and ask the UMC what to attach.
If personal details differ across documents in your licence application, do not alter originals or submit conflicting copies without an explanation. Ask the UMC which official record clarifies the change and which copies or translations must be included in the file.
Identify and document the difference
Compare first and last name, date and place of birth, tax code, address and transliteration across your ID, tax-code document, medical certificate and application. A difference may come from a legal name change, different transliteration or a clerical error. The UMC must link all documents to the same person, so prepare your current document and the official record proving the change, such as a registry certificate or legal decision, as appropriate.
If a document was issued abroad or is in another language, ask whether an official translation or legalisation is needed. Do not edit a scan, change a signed form by hand or submit a generic statement when an official record exists. For a typing error in the file, ask the office whether to correct or replace the form and whether a full copy of a document is required.
Ask for the right supplement
Contact the UMC receiving your application and explain exactly which fields do not match. If the file is already open, use its reference number and follow any request for additional documents; keep the protocol and delivery receipts. Do not open a second application or pay again just because the office needs to clarify identity unless it explicitly instructs you to. If tax-code details are inconsistent, check with the tax authority or municipality which record is official.
Before attending, prepare originals and copies in the format requested and ask whether staff need to inspect the issuing document. Identification rules may differ for EU/EEA citizens and non-EU applicants, so explain your status. A consistent file prevents delays and incorrect matching of medical records. An app can help review theory but cannot correct civil records or replace official documents.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review B theory with chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hand-correct a detail on the form?
Do not do so without instructions from the UMC. Ask whether you must replace the form and which official record proves the correct detail.
Does a foreign certificate need translation?
It may. Check with the UMC whether your document requires an official translation or legalisation.
