Damaged licence: when should you request a replacement?

A replacement for damage is needed when identity details, personal data, expiry date or photograph cannot be read.

MIT considers a licence damaged if its document identifiers, holder's details, expiry date or photograph are unreadable; the process depends on remaining validity.

When a document is considered damaged

A damaged licence does not automatically require replacement. MIT identifies material damage as making at least one essential element unreadable: the document identifiers, the holder's personal data, the expiry date or the photograph. If the plastic or print is marked but all those details remain readable, check with the UMC whether replacement is still needed; do not decide alone that the document is valid in every situation.

If essential details cannot be read, MIT says to request a replacement from the local motor vehicle office. The application uses the specified form, a full copy of the licence and the original for inspection, as well as the payment and other documents listed on the current page. This process differs from a lost or stolen licence: if you still have the damaged card, keep it and follow the damage procedure.

A near expiry date changes the paperwork

Medical paperwork depends on how soon the licence expires. MIT says that if the licence is current and will not expire within six months of the application, the documents listed for a damage replacement are required; if it is already expired or will expire within six months, the receipt for a medical fitness examination is also needed. Check the expiry before gathering documents and do not reuse the checklist for a different case.

Before submitting, compare the form, attachments and payment method with the current MIT page and your UMC's instructions, since documents depend on the actual situation. If the card is damaged close to renewal, ask whether the procedures can be coordinated.
