D1E: which trailer can a minibus tow?

Category D1E covers a D1 towing vehicle and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg; the vehicle must still meet the D1 limits.

D1E adds a combination; it does not change the minibus

D1E is needed to drive a combination made up of a D1 vehicle and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass is over 750 kg. The Italian Highway Code does not impose the same 12-tonne total-combination ceiling on D1E as it does on C1E. The towing vehicle must still be a D1 vehicle: designed for no more than 16 passengers besides the driver and no longer than 8 metres. The E extension does not turn an overlength or over-capacity minibus into a D1 vehicle.

The trailer threshold concerns its maximum authorised mass, not its unladen weight or the load on a particular journey. A trailer authorised at 900 kg crosses the threshold even when empty; one authorised at exactly 750 kg does not. D1 alone permits towing up to 750 kg, while a higher authorised mass points to D1E.

Check the licence and approved combination

D1E is the licence category for driving, but the combination must also be technically permitted. Check the towing vehicle's document for towing capacity and coupling conditions, and verify the trailer data and category. Holding D1E does not authorise exceeding the minibus's towing capacity. If the combination is used for work, separately assess whether passenger CQC or another qualification is required for the service.

Before using the vehicle, compare the registration documents, trailer maximum authorised mass, towing capacity and coupling specifications.
