How to obtain a goods CQC
How to obtain the Driver Qualification Card for goods transport and understand when it is needed alongside a category C licence.
The goods CQC is a professional qualification separate from the driving licence. You obtain it by completing an initial course with an authorised provider and passing the MIT exam.
When it is required
The Driver Qualification Card (CQC) certifies the professional training required for certain goods transport activities. MIT links it to professional driving of vehicles requiring categories C1, C, C1E or CE, depending on the activity and applicable legal exceptions. It is not required for every private use of a lorry: the deciding factors are the professional nature of the transport and the vehicle regime.
The CQC and driving licence are separate credentials. The licence allows you to drive a class of vehicle; the CQC qualifies you for professional work. If you already hold category C or CE, do not assume that this alone is enough to work: ask your employer or driving school which qualification and goods code you need for your situation. MIT’s CQC page is the reference for current categories and conditions.
Enrolling in the course
The initial course takes place at a driving school or centre authorised to provide CQC training. Before paying, ask whether the course is standard or accelerated, which vehicle category it covers, which documents are required, how attendance is recorded and when the exams are held. Combining a category C licence and CQC at a younger age involves specific rules and required steps; simply saying that you intend to work is not enough.
MIT publishes regulations and circulars on the syllabus, exam procedures and authorised providers. Ask the provider for the current regulation reference, a written schedule and a clear list of what the fee includes. Do not assume the cost or duration based on someone else’s experience: location, format and course route can affect them, and prices are not uniform nationwide.
The test and issue of the qualification
To obtain the qualification, you must complete the course and pass the exam at a Motor Vehicle Office under the current syllabus. When the course is combined with a new licence, some practical CQC activities depend on passing the licence theory test and receiving a learner’s permit. Agree on the sequence of steps with the school and UMC in advance, especially to avoid booking a test before meeting the requirements.
Preparation should combine theory practice with a practical understanding of safety, loads, driving hours and professional responsibilities. If an exam question is unclear, raise the topic with your instructor and consult official references instead of memorising an isolated answer. After the qualification is issued, check that your personal details, category and expiry date are correct.
Validity and periodic training
The qualification can be renewed every five years through periodic training. Renewal is separate from renewing your driving licence, so plan the required course in advance. Keep your certificates and check the expiry date on the CQC and in official notices; confirm attendance recording and procedures with an authorised provider.

Frequently asked questions
Does the goods CQC replace a category C licence?
No. You need the appropriate driving licence category for the vehicle; the CQC is an additional professional qualification when your work requires it.
Do I need the goods CQC to use a lorry privately?
Not automatically. Whether it is required depends on the transport activity and applicable rules, not simply on holding a category C licence.
