CE licence: minimum age and the goods CQC route
The minimum age for CE depends on the route; the driving licence and goods CQC are separate titles with separate requirements.
CE is normally obtained from age 21. An age-18 route is available through the ordinary goods CQC pathway, subject to specific requirements.
The standard route and the CQC route
Category CE covers combinations with a category C towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer over 750 kg. The MIT page gives 21 as the standard minimum age. Italian rules also provide a professional route at a lower age: from 18, a driver may drive C and CE vehicles for goods transport if they hold a CQC obtained after the ordinary initial qualification course and its examination. Merely enrolling in a course or holding category C alone is not enough.
The decree distinguishes further cases. For a driver whose CQC follows an accelerated course, the stated age for C and CE is 21; for C1 and C1E, an accelerated pathway may allow professional driving from 18. These figures concern professional driving and must not be mistaken for the minimum age to obtain the licence category by itself. Confirm the actual route with a driving school and the competent motor vehicle office, especially if planning the licence and CQC together.
The licence and qualification remain separate
CE concerns the vehicle combination; the goods CQC qualifies a driver for professional transport in the cases covered by the rules. One does not replace the other. An applicant may therefore have to meet requirements for both and follow the age conditions attached to the selected route. Category C is also the prerequisite towing category for CE: the E extension relates to a category already held.
Before enrolling, clarify whether you want CE for non-professional use or a career in goods transport, which CQC course applies, and when theory, practical tests and training can take place. The age limits depend on current rules and the combination of qualifications, not on a general exemption.
