CE licence: when do you need it for a truck and semi-trailer?
CE extends category C to combinations with a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorised mass is over 750 kg.
A CE licence is required for a combination made up of a category C towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass above 750 kg.
When category C is not enough
Category C covers goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg, subject to the category's conditions. A C vehicle may tow a trailer whose maximum authorised mass is no more than 750 kg. When the towing vehicle is category C and the trailer or semi-trailer has a maximum authorised mass above 750 kg, CE is the corresponding category for the combination.
The rule does not depend on whether people colloquially call the vehicle a truck, tractor unit or articulated lorry. What matters is the towing vehicle category and the trailer's official figures. A category C tractor unit with a semi-trailer authorised at exactly 750 kg does not cross the CE threshold; at 751 kg it does. An empty semi-trailer does not fall below the threshold if its maximum authorised mass is higher.
Separate the category, masses and professional use
Check the registration documents for both the towing vehicle and the trailer or semi-trailer. Maximum authorised mass differs from unladen mass and from the towing capacity stated for the vehicle. Even with the right licence, the combination must comply with technical towing limits and road-use requirements. A trailer up to 750 kg does not trigger CE on this category threshold alone, but other requirements still apply.
CE addresses the driving category for the combination; it is not the CQC goods qualification. If the vehicle is used for professional transport, separately check whether the activity requires a CQC and whether an exemption applies.
