C1 or C licence for work: which category does your truck need?

C1 and C mainly differ in the vehicle's maximum authorised mass and in the qualification required for the work performed.

C1 covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg; C has no upper limit at 7,500 kg. Professional transport may also require a CQC.

Compare maximum authorised mass

Start with the vehicle category shown in its registration documents, not the load it happens to carry today. Italian category C1 covers motor vehicles other than passenger vehicles in categories D1 and D, with a maximum authorised mass above 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg. They may carry up to eight passengers besides the driver and tow a trailer whose maximum authorised mass is no more than 750 kg. Category C covers the same general vehicle type above 3,500 kg, without the 7,500 kg ceiling; the ordinary trailer limit is also 750 kg.

For example, a truck registered with a maximum authorised mass of 6,800 kg can fall under C1 even if it is nearly empty on a particular journey. The authorised figure matters, not that day's measured weight. A vehicle authorised at 8,000 kg requires C. Check passenger seats and purpose too: C1 and C do not replace D categories for buses. If a trailer exceeds 750 kg, look at C1E or CE according to the towing vehicle and the authorised mass of the combination.

A driving category is separate from a professional qualification

For work, answer two separate questions: which licence category covers the vehicle, and which qualification covers the transport activity? C1 or C authorises the relevant vehicle category. A professional goods transport activity may also require a Driver Qualification Card (CQC merci) under the applicable rules. Exemptions depend on the type and purpose of the transport, so the word “work” alone does not settle the question.

Check the registration document, maximum authorised mass, seats, any trailer, and the actual use. For professional work, also confirm with the employer or competent office which CQC applies and whether an exemption covers the activity. C1 may be enough for a vehicle within 7,500 kg; holding C does not automatically grant the CQC. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter study, C practice quizzes and explanations to review theory. It cannot classify a specific truck or replace professional qualification training.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review C theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Does a truck authorised at 7,500 kg require C1 or C?

The C1 threshold includes 7,500 kg: it covers vehicles up to that maximum authorised mass. Above it, C is required, provided the vehicle does not belong to a passenger-transport category.

Can I work with a C licence without a CQC?

That depends on the transport and statutory exemptions. The driving licence covers the vehicle; a CQC is a separate qualification required for certain professional activities.
