Do you have to retake the theory test for category BE?

Most candidates who took the category B theory test after 1 December 2013 do not need to retake it; check the date.

MIT distinguishes candidates by the date of their category B theory test: after 1 December 2013, the theory test is not repeated; earlier candidates must take a supplementary oral test.

The date that changes the answer

To obtain category BE, you must already hold a category B licence. The MIT page says that candidates who obtained category B by taking the relevant theory test after 1 December 2013 do not have to take the theory test again. Candidates who took the category B theory test before that date must take an oral test during the first practical phase, covering the knowledge needed to drive BE combinations safely. So do not look only at the year your licence was issued: check when you passed the theory test.

If you obtained category B by conversion, with a foreign licence or through a special procedure, ask the UMC how the date is recorded and which route applies. The MIT rule describes the standard case, but the details in your application determine what you can book. Category BE authorises you to drive a combination with a category B towing vehicle and trailer or semi-trailer, within the applicable limits; do not confuse it with code 96, which covers a different weight range.

The practical test is still required

Even if you do not have to retake the theory test, you must pass a practical test using a compliant vehicle combination. The procedure assesses checks, coupling, manoeuvres and driving with a trailer; the vehicle must meet the ministerial requirements for weight, dimensions and equipment. The MIT page specifies minimum features, including dual controls in the towing vehicle and the presence of a qualified instructor. Before applying, ask who will provide the vehicle and which trailer documents you must bring.

The BE learner’s permit has its own validity period and test attempts, as set out on the Ministry page. Arrange the test with a school that can train you in real manoeuvres, because driving with a trailer requires you to judge its dimensions and path. If you have to take the old oral test, ask for the syllabus and topics before the session. Keep your application, receipts, medical certificate and appointment notice; select the fee in the PagoPA portal for the specific test you are booking.
