Getting your licence
B1 licence at 16: eligibility and how to obtain it
You can obtain B1 from age 16 to drive non-light quadricycles; an application, medical fitness and exams are required.
Category B1 is available from age 16 and covers non-light quadricycles within the applicable limits. The ordinary route requires an application, medical fitness and exams. A light AM quadricycle is a different vehicle category, so check the vehicle’s approval.
Minimum age and eligible vehicles
You must be at least 16 to obtain a B1 licence. The category covers non-light quadricycles with technical characteristics defined by law. Relevant criteria include mass, power and classification, which can depend on the type of propulsion. A vehicle does not qualify just because it has four wheels or is marketed as a microcar. Check its approved category and registration data before deciding which licence is required.
B1 and AM are not interchangeable. AM covers mopeds and light quadricycles within its technical thresholds; B1 covers a different quadricycle category. A B licence, available from age 18, covers cars within its own limits. For example, an electric microcar can be light or non-light: electric power alone does not determine which licence applies. If the documents are unclear, ask the seller for the approval data and confirm them with the licensing office.
Application and exams
The process starts with an application to the civil motorisation office, directly or through a driving school, together with the documents and payments listed by MIT. Medical fitness is required. In the ordinary route, you pass a theory test and a practical test; the learner authorisation is issued under the applicable rules after passing theory. Administrative details and test availability can change, so consult current Ministry and local office instructions before filing your documents.
If you already hold certain licence categories, the rules may allow a route with only a practical test. Check the Ministry’s current list and your own record before assuming that theory is waived. You can prepare theory by studying chapters and practising explained questions. The practical test requires practice with a suitable vehicle and attention to manoeuvres and traffic. Turning 16 does not authorise you to drive before the relevant licence or learner authorisation is issued.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you study theory with chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics; practical skills require vehicle practice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get B1 as soon as I turn 16?
Sixteen is the minimum age, but medical fitness, the application process and the required exams still apply.
Does every microcar require B1?
No. It depends on the approved category. A light quadricycle may fall under AM, while another quadricycle may require B1.
