Licence medical: what if the doctor is unsure about fitness to drive?

If an authorised doctor has doubts about fitness to drive, they may refer you to the Local Medical Commission for assessment.

If the authorised doctor finds a condition that raises doubts about fitness to drive, they may refer the assessment to the Local Medical Commission. Follow the medical instructions and appointment; do not assess your health status on your own.

A referral is a further medical assessment

The licence medical examination checks the physical and mental requirements set by the Highway Code. The MIT explains that when a clinical condition may raise doubts about safe driving, the assessment must be made by the Local Medical Commission (CML), a panel of doctors. The doctor conducting the visit may therefore refer the applicant to the CML. A referral alone is not a final finding of unfitness: it means the decision requires the panel assessment provided by the rules.

Follow the doctor’s and commission’s instructions, gather the requested documents and attend the appointment. The CML may request examinations or specialist records depending on the case; a diagnosis should not be interpreted outside its medical context. Do not stop medication or change treatment to influence the visit. Discuss treatment with your clinician and give the certifying doctor accurate information.

Prepare for the Commission

Ask the CML office which certificates, test results and booking methods it requires. Bring current records and the appointment notice. If you are applying for your first licence, also check how long the medical receipt remains valid: the MIT gives different periods for a single-doctor visit and a commission assessment. If the commission issues a decision or restriction, follow the written report and ask the competent office if anything is unclear.

The CML may set a shorter licence validity period based on the clinical situation. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you revise category B theory, quizzes and explanations; app study is separate from medical assessment and does not provide a health judgement.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise category B theory; medical fitness is assessed by authorised doctors and the CML.

Should I stop medication before the visit?

No. Do not change treatment on your own. Tell the doctor about your medicines and follow your clinician’s advice.
