Licence medical: what happens if the doctor questions fitness to drive
If the certifying doctor has doubts about fitness to drive, they may refer you to the Local Medical Commission for a collective assessment.
When a clinical condition may raise doubts about fitness to drive, the assessment must be carried out by the Local Medical Commission (CML). Follow the referral, book the visit and prepare the documents requested by the commission; do not change or stop treatment on your own.
Why the CML may be involved
MIT distinguishes authorised doctors who assess a person individually from local commissions made up of several doctors. A CML is involved, among other cases, when a clinical situation may raise doubts about fitness to drive. A referral does not automatically mean you are unfit: it means an additional medical assessment is needed for the licence in question. The doctor explains which records or examinations are needed, and the commission then reaches a decision based on the findings.
Ask how to book at the competent CML, which recent reports to bring and whether the doctor has sent a report. Also prepare identification, your existing licence if you hold one, receipts and any notices. Requirements depend on the reason for referral, so do not use a generic checklist instead of the commission’s instructions. If the appointment notice requests specialist tests, follow that request and ask the doctor whether the records need updating before the visit.
After the decision
The CML may find you fit, set conditions or issue a shorter licence validity period based on the condition and category requested. Decisions are individual: an outcome cannot be predicted from a diagnosis alone or from having held a licence in the past. If the decision is unclear, ask the commission or UMC how to proceed with your application and which codes will appear on the document.
Until the assessment is complete, follow the conditions of your licence and official notices; do not treat a booking receipt as an automatic extension of driving entitlement. A temporary permit applies to specific CML renewal procedures and MIT-defined conditions, not every medical visit for a new licence. Theory preparation is separate from medical assessment: quizzes and revision do not establish fitness or replace clinical advice.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you study theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics; it does not assess medical fitness.
Frequently asked questions
Does referral to the CML mean I cannot get a licence?
No. It means a collective assessment is needed to clarify your fitness in this case; the result depends on the examinations and the commission’s decision.
Can I choose which medical reports to bring?
Follow the doctor’s and CML’s instructions. Ask which specialist records are required for the specific referral.
