Requirements
Category B: why does the expiry date match your birthday?
An ordinary B licence expires on the holder’s birthday, but exceptions depend on the category and medical examination.
An ordinary category B licence expires on the holder’s birthday, matching the day and month. The alignment does not apply to every category or to some renewals assessed by a local medical commission.
The date follows your birth day and month
For ordinary AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE licences, MIT says the expiry date falls on the driver's birthday. For example, a B licence aligned to 12 September remains valid up to the date printed on the document; renewal and the following validity period follow the applicable procedure. The alignment makes the date easier to remember, but it does not renew the licence automatically or allow you to drive beyond the printed expiry date.
Use the date on the document rather than calculating a new one by adding ten years to your medical examination. Birthday alignment can affect the initial period or later renewals. MIT explains that the system was introduced gradually and applies immediately when a new driver receives the licence. If the document does not show the birthday you expect, follow the printed date and ask the doctor or UMC to clarify instead of assuming it is an error.
The main exceptions
A birthday expiry is not universal. MIT excludes C and D categories, CQC qualifications, and A or B licences renewed after an examination by a local medical commission or certain specialist doctors at the local health authority. Expiry intervals also depend on category and age, and a commission may set shorter intervals when the medical assessment requires them. An ordinary B renewal after a standard examination can therefore have a different date from a B renewal assessed by a CML.
For planning, note the actual date printed on the licence and book the examination in advance, taking into account the required type of doctor. Do not confuse the birthday with the appointment date or standard renewal duration. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review B theory with chapter study, quizzes, explanations and study statistics, but it does not manage renewals or medical certificates.

Frequently asked questions
Does a B licence always expire on the holder's birthday?
Usually, if it is an ordinary licence. MIT lists exceptions, including some renewals through a CML or specialist doctors.
Can I drive after my birthday if I have not renewed yet?
Follow the expiry date printed on the licence. Renewal is not automatic and should not be inferred from the calendar alone.
