Driving test
B96 and BE: how do the practical tests differ?
B96 extends B for combinations up to 4,250 kg through a practical test; BE is a separate category for combinations above that threshold.
Code 96 is obtained through a practical test with a B combination over 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg. BE is a separate category for combinations above that threshold, with its own requirements and practical test.
When B96 is sufficient
Category B allows towing within its ordinary limits. When the trailer exceeds 750 kg and the combination’s maximum authorised mass is over 3,500 kg but no more than 4,250 kg, you can obtain code 96 by passing an ability and behaviour test. The code is added to the licence and extends category B for that combination. It is not a separate theory exam.
The practical test uses a specific vehicle and assesses driving the combination, including relevant manoeuvres. Before booking, confirm with the UMC or driving school which car and trailer are accepted for the test. Compare the sum of maximum authorised masses in the documents, not the actual weight on the day. Also account for the towing vehicle’s technical towing limit.
When BE is required
If the combination’s maximum authorised mass exceeds 4,250 kg, B96 is insufficient and category BE may be required. BE is separate: you must already hold B and pass its practical test with a suitable combination. The BE trailer also has its own maximum authorised mass limit of 3,500 kg; the category does not mean unlimited towing.
For example, if the authorised masses of a car and trailer add up to 4,100 kg, the combination may fit code 96 if the trailer exceeds 750 kg and all other conditions are met. If they total 4,600 kg, assess BE and check technical limits and approval too. Practical preparation involves braking, turning, mirrors and reversing with the combination. The app can support theory revision but cannot simulate or replace the practical test.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review category B and towing rules through chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. B96 or BE manoeuvres require practical training with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
Do B96 and BE use the same practical test?
They are separate routes: B96 is a practical test for code 96, while BE is a category with its own test and requirements.
Is the threshold calculated from the car and trailer’s actual weight?
The category range is based on the maximum authorised masses in the documents, alongside the vehicles’ technical limits.
