Driving licence PagoPA: what to do if you paid the wrong tariff
A wrong PagoPA tariff is not fixed by making another payment automatically: keep the receipt and check MIT's procedure.
For an incorrect or undue PagoPA payment, keep the IUV and receipt, check its status and consult MIT or the UMC before paying again; recovery depends on the payment type.
Check the payment and application first
A paid PagoPA notice may refer to a tariff different from the one required for a B application, for example if you selected the code for another operation. Do not try to cancel it through your bank and do not immediately make a second payment. Sign in to the Portale dell’automobilista and check “My payments”, tariff code, status and the applicant's details. Keep the IUV identifier and receipt printed from the portal.
MIT distinguishes incorrect or undue payments from payments already used for an application. For a paid IUV that has not yet been used, the ministry describes management options, which may include using it for another procedure that requires the same code or converting it into a credit under stated conditions. A payment with the wrong code cannot be freely transferred to any tariff: follow the official process.
Ask for instructions before paying twice
Contact the UMC handling the application or the support listed by MIT. Provide the procedure, selected tariff, IUV and payment status. Ask whether the payment can be associated or reused, or whether you must request a refund and create a new notice. The answer depends on the type of error and status: a payment already associated or used follows different rules from an unused one.
If the test booking is imminent, tell the office what happened and provide the receipt when asked. Do not treat the error as resolved until the UMC confirms which tariff is required. The receipt for the application is the one downloaded from the portal, not only the confirmation from the payment provider. Frequently asked questions
Should I immediately pay the correct tariff a second time?
First check the payment status and ask the UMC what process to follow. Do not duplicate the payment without knowing how the existing one will be handled.
Can I use the incorrect payment for a different tariff?
Not automatically. MIT sets procedures and limits for unused PagoPA payments; check that the required code is the same or ask about credit or refund instructions.
