Parking in the driving test: how to prepare without memorising

Learn to use reference points, observation and slow, controlled movements to park safely during the category B test.

You do not need to memorise a fixed sequence of steering-wheel turns for parking. What matters is observing, positioning the car, moving slowly and correcting safely.

The manoeuvre must adapt to the space

Successful parking comes from reading the space and controlling the vehicle at low speed, not from a fixed number of half-turns. Cars differ in size, turning radius and window positions; parking spaces, kerbs and obstacles differ too. A memorised sequence can fail when your starting point or angle changes.

Before moving, check your mirrors and blind spots, signal and look for pedestrians or cyclists. Choose a path that fits the space and move very slowly, ready to stop. The examiner assesses observation, control, safety and consideration for other road users, not just the car’s final position.

Practising your reference points

During lessons, ask your instructor to explain what to look at in each stage: initial alignment, lateral clearance, visibility behind the car and the position of the wheel relative to the edge. Use visual reference points to help, then check that they work with different cars and parking spaces. The aim is to connect each reference point to the car’s actual position, not to recite a mechanical formula.

Practise both parking and pulling out of the space. The manoeuvre is complete only if you do not mount the kerb or hit obstacles and leave the vehicle in a safe position. If you need to correct, stop, look again and set off calmly: a controlled correction is better than continuing along a path you can no longer control.

Watch for people and use the controls carefully

Keep shifting your gaze between the mirrors, windscreen and direction of travel. Do not turn the steering wheel while the car is moving quickly; use the clutch, brake and accelerator smoothly, according to the type of vehicle. Check traffic before entering or leaving the space, and do not rely on sensors: the test requires you to observe the surroundings directly.

Anxiety often makes you speed up and narrows your field of view. Before you start, breathe, listen to the instructions and ask for clarification if you have not understood which side or space is required. Do not move off until the instruction is clear. If the road is busy, your priority is to avoid creating danger; the examiner may assess your decision to wait.

A useful exercise before the test

Ask for a lesson covering three variations: parallel parking, reversing into a parking space and pulling out of a tight space. After each manoeuvre, describe what you saw and when you decided to turn. This helps you apply the principle in a new situation instead of tying it to a particular kerb or car.

Frequently asked questions

Can I correct my parking during the test?

The manoeuvre must remain controlled and safe. Ask your instructor how corrections are assessed in the current test.

Do I have to use parking sensors?

Follow the examiner’s instructions, but continue to observe the surroundings directly and use your mirrors.
