New-driver limits: the difference between 75 kW/t and 105 kW

75 kW per tonne and 105 kW are different thresholds; both apply to M1 plug-in cars during the first three years.

For the first three years after obtaining category B, Article 117 sets a limit of 75 kW per tonne and, for M1 passenger cars, an additional 105 kW cap. M1 plug-in vehicles must meet both checks.

These are two thresholds with different units

The 75 kW/t figure is a ratio: it compares a vehicle’s power with its tare mass. The 105 kW limit is an absolute power ceiling that applies to M1 passenger cars under the updated rule. These are not alternative thresholds. During the three-year period, an M1 plug-in car must meet both the power-to-tare ratio and the kW cap.

For example, a car may be below 105 kW but exceed 75 kW/t if it is relatively light. Another may have a ratio below the threshold and still exceed 105 kW. Engine displacement alone does not establish the result. Check its category and approved data, and enter the registration number in MIT’s new-driver checker to assess the specific vehicle.

Apply the rule to the relevant period

The duration and start date depend on the rule applicable to when the B licence was obtained. Under the regime introduced by Law 177/2024, these limits apply for three years from the grant of the category. Do not automatically apply the new period to licences obtained before the reform took effect: check the date and applicable regime.

The MIT registration checker is preferable to a hand calculation that may use the wrong mass or data from another version. Confirm that you entered the registration number for the car you will drive and that the result is current. If the service is unavailable or returns an unexpected result, ask the UMC. Eligibility checking does not replace a valid licence, insurance or compliance with speed limits. Power restrictions and speed limits are separate obligations that apply at the same time.

To review limits and definitions, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and study statistics. Check a particular car’s eligibility by entering its registration number in the MIT service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose between 75 kW/t and 105 kW?

No. A restricted M1 plug-in passenger car must meet both the ratio and the absolute power ceiling.

Does the limit apply to every electric vehicle?

The additional 105 kW cap applies to M1 passenger cars. Check the vehicle category and registration through the official service.
