How many driving lessons are compulsory before getting a category B licence?

The answer depends on when your learner’s permit was issued: MIT currently lists at least six hours, while the new eight-hour requirement awaits activation.

The MIT page currently lists six certified hours for a standard category B licence. Ministerial Decree 294/2025 raises the total to eight once the implementing decree for the platform takes effect.

The current requirement and the reform

For a standard category B licence, the MIT page consulted currently requires at least six hours of compulsory driving practice with a qualified instructor authorised at a driving school. Ministerial Decree no. 294 of 17 November 2025 introduces a new eight-hour programme, divided into modules, with certification through a platform. However, the decree says the new provisions take effect on the date the director’s decree governing use of the platform enters into force. It is therefore incorrect to say that every candidate is already required to complete eight hours simply because the decree has been published.

The applicable rules depend on when the authorisation to practise was issued. Decree 294 provides that authorisations issued before the implementing instructions take effect remain subject to the provisions of the decree of 20 April 2012. Before booking or buying a lesson package, ask the UMC or driving school which rule applies to your learner’s permit and what certificate you will need to submit. Ministry pages may be updated at different times, so check the date and do not rely on an old screenshot.

What the lessons cover

The current arrangement described by MIT requires at least six hours at a driving school, including practice in night-time conditions and on motorways or major extra-urban roads. The future decree expands and structures the course into modules with different objectives. In either case, the lessons are delivered by a qualified instructor, and private practice with a supervising driver does not replace the required certificate. The driving school records and documents the training under the rules that apply to the candidate.

When asking for information, specify the date you applied and the date your learner’s permit was issued. Ask how many hours you must complete, which modules apply, how they are certified and by when they must be finished. Candidates with restrictions or a special category B licence may qualify for exceptions or reductions under the decrees. If a certificate has already been issued and you need to submit a second application, ask the UMC whether it remains valid and for how long. Keeping the reply in writing helps you avoid planning around generic information.

Before booking lessons

  • Check your learner’s permit and its issue date.
  • Compare the MIT page with the latest implementing provisions.
  • Ask in writing about the number of hours, modules, price and certification.

Frequently asked questions

Are eight compulsory hours already in force?

Decree 294/2025 provides for eight hours but makes them effective only when the director’s decree on the platform takes effect. The MIT category B page consulted still lists six hours; check for updates and the date your learner’s permit was issued.

Can I complete the hours with a family member?

No. Certified lessons must take place at a driving school with a qualified instructor. Private accompanied driving has different purposes and rules.
