Can you change cars for the practical test after taking lessons?

You can change the car for the category B practical test, but the replacement must meet MIT requirements and its transmission must match the type declared for the authorisation and test. Tell your driving school or UMC before the appointment.

Check the requirements and transmission type

The category B test vehicle must meet the minimum characteristics listed by MIT, including dual controls and the ability to reach the required speed. If you change cars, check that the replacement is compliant and available with the required equipment. Having taken lessons in another car does not automatically make a last-minute choice suitable for the test.

Consider the transmission separately. The procedure requires the candidate to declare the transmission type for which the authorisation is requested; if you take the practical test in an automatic car, code 78 is added to the licence and permits you to drive automatic vehicles only. Check that the replacement car matches your goal and what the office has recorded.

Notify the office before the test

Tell the driving school or UMC as soon as you decide to use another car. Ask whether the booking, transmission indication or vehicle details must be updated. A school car or a car owned by a third party may require specific procedures and declarations; do not arrive with a different vehicle before confirming it is accepted.

If you practised in a manual car but choose an automatic only for convenience, consider that code 78 then restricts you to automatic vehicles. If you want a licence without that restriction, make sure the test is taken with the transmission required by the procedure. Take a few lessons in the chosen model to become familiar with its seating position, visibility and controls.
