Expired identity document: can you take the driving test?

A valid identity document must be presented for the application and test; renew it before your appointment and bring the original.

MIT requires a current identity document to be shown when applying for a category B licence. If it has expired, renew it before the test and bring the valid original requested by the UMC.

Check the expiry date before test day

MIT’s category B application information lists a valid identity document to be shown, together with a full photocopy. The copy does not replace the original when the office needs to verify your identity. If your document has expired, do not assume the application’s earlier acceptance is enough: you may be asked to identify yourself with a current document when called for the test.

Check the expiry date as soon as you receive the test notice and allow time to renew your identity card or passport through your municipality or relevant authority. If renewal is in progress but you do not yet have the new document, ask the UMC in advance which temporary documents it accepts on test day; do not assume an appointment receipt is enough. Bring the valid original and an updated copy if requested.

Update the file if your details change

If you renew your document or your name, address or other details change, check that the application and file contain consistent information. Notify the office of changes through the specified channel. A mismatch between the identity document, application and booking may require clarification and delay admission to the test.

Before leaving for the test centre, check the notice, valid identity document, learner permit and any other items the UMC requested. Keep a copy of the document submitted with your application, and do not send personal information to an address the office has not provided. If the document expires between booking and the test, renew it before the appointment even if it was valid when you booked. The practical rule is simple: you must be able to identify yourself with a valid document on the day of the test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I identify myself with a photocopy of my expired document?

MIT requires a valid identity document to be shown. The full photocopy is an attachment and does not replace the valid original.

Is a renewal application receipt always accepted?

Do not assume so. Ask the UMC ahead of time which temporary documents it accepts for the test appointment.
