Change of address during a licence application: who should you tell?

If you change residence while your category B application is open, notify the UMC handling it and ask whether jurisdiction or the file must be transferred. Do not assume the change of address automatically updates the application.

Notify the office holding your file

The licence application and its documents are handled by the UMC managing the procedure. If you change residence, inform that office once the new address is in effect and ask which details to update and through which channel. Include your application or protocol number, name, date of birth and requested category, but do not send document copies to unverified contact details.

Ask explicitly whether the same UMC remains responsible, whether future correspondence will go to the new address and whether a test already booked is affected. Changing your registered residence and transferring an examination file are different operations: do not assume one automatically updates the other. If the office asks for a declaration or updated document, follow its format and deadline.

Protect deadlines and correspondence

Check that your learner permit, medical certificate, bookings and contact details remain valid during the change. A new residence does not extend application deadlines. If you move to another province and also want to move your test, ask the current and destination UMC whether a formal file transfer is needed, how previous attempts will be recorded and when you may book at the new office.

Keep a copy of your notice, the office’s response and any protocol or delivery receipt. Update your email and phone number too if they have changed, so you do not miss a test notice or request for more documents. If a letter reaches your old address, contact the UMC promptly to check whether a deadline is running; do not ignore it because your residence has been updated. A direct check reduces mismatches between residence records, the application and test location.
