Can you ride a 125 cc motorcycle abroad with an Italian B licence?
In Italy, B covers certain 125 cc motorcycles; do not assume the same rule applies outside the country.
The option to ride a motorcycle up to 125 cc with an Italian category B licence applies only in Italy. If you travel abroad, do not assume this permission is valid there: check the destination country’s rules or see whether your licence also lists a motorcycle category.
The Italian rule for category B
The Italian Ministry says category B allows you to ride motorcycles in Italy with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio up to 0.1 kW/kg. Every limit must be met; engine size alone is not enough. Check the motorcycle’s technical data and your licence category. A motorcycle that exceeds even one limit does not qualify under this option.
The MIT page explicitly limits this permission to Italy. It is a national rule connected to an Italian B licence, not an automatic conversion of B into A1 for travel. If your licence separately lists category A1, A2 or A, check that category and any codes or restrictions printed on it.
Check before travelling to another country
If you want to use a scooter or 125 cc motorcycle during a trip, check the official road or transport authority website for the destination country. Look for the rule for foreign drivers with a B licence and whether it requires experience, training, category A1 or other conditions. Do not rely on a forum or the fact that an insurer issued a policy: permission to ride and insurance cover are separate questions.
If your route crosses several countries, check each one, including brief stops or crossings. Carry your licence and vehicle documents and follow local rules on helmets, protective equipment and road use. If you cannot find official confirmation that B alone is enough, do not ride until the competent authority clarifies your case.
