Requirements
Category B and 125 cc motorcycles: when can you ride one in Italy?
In Italy, B covers certain A1-equivalent motorcycles, subject to displacement, power, power-to-weight ratio and territory.
In Italy, a category B licence also authorises motorcycles in category A1 limits: up to 125 cc, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg. This national equivalence does not automatically apply abroad; check every technical limit and the territory.
Check all three technical figures
With a B licence in Italy, you may ride a motorcycle that falls within category A1 limits: maximum displacement of 125 cc, maximum power of 11 kW and a power-to-mass ratio no higher than 0.1 kW/kg. All conditions must be met. A 125 cc vehicle can exceed the power or ratio limit, so displacement alone is insufficient. Read the type-approval data and vehicle registration certificate instead of relying on the model name or a sales listing.
This authorisation comes from Italy’s national equivalence rule; it does not mean that you obtained category A1 through its own examination. Territorial validity therefore matters: do not assume that B lets you ride the same motorcycle abroad. Check the destination country’s rules before travelling and obtain the motorcycle category if required. In Italy, also make sure your licence is valid and the vehicle is permitted on the road.
The app does not have A1-specific quizzes
For the Italian rule allowing some A1 motorcycles under B, the app offers general theory and limit revision, not a dedicated course or quiz bank for obtaining category A1. Do not treat a general chapter or B quiz as specific preparation for the A1 exam. If you intend to obtain A1 as a separate category, follow the official programme and procedure for that examination.
Before riding, compare the power, displacement and ratio shown in the documents against all three limits. A motorcycle that fails even one is outside the B–A1 equivalence; slowing down or staying in town does not change that. For a special version or inconsistent data, ask the UMC or consult the type approval. Use a helmet and protective equipment, and consider your experience and traffic conditions: legal eligibility does not remove the need for careful riding.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride any 125 cc motorcycle with B?
No. It must also stay within 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg, and the equivalence applies in Italy.
Does B authorise the same 125 cc motorcycle abroad?
Not automatically. The rule described is national; check the relevant country’s requirements before riding outside Italy.
