AM driving test: theory and practical exam

An AM licence requires theory and practical tests; choose in advance the vehicle and setup for your riding test.

An AM licence requires both theory and practical tests. For the practical exam, you may choose a two- or three-wheel moped or a light quadricycle, and select the transmission in your application.

Application and theory

An AM licence allows you to ride mopeds and light quadricycles that meet the technical limits. The minimum age is 14; you may carry a passenger only in a vehicle approved for that purpose and once you are 16. Start by applying at the Civil Motorisation Office (UMC) or through a driving school, with the medical, documents and payments listed by MIT. If the applicant is a minor, the parent or guardian must also sign as instructed.

The theory test comes before the learner's permit. Current standard procedures for AM, A and B theory quizzes are set by ministerial rules; use the official AM question list on the Motorist Portal and do not confuse it with the AB list. Once you pass, you can practise within the permitted limits; the learner's permit is not a full licence and does not allow a passenger when the vehicle or your age does not permit one. Keep your appointment notice and documents for the practical stage.

The practical test and vehicle choice

MIT says the AM practical test may use a two- or three-wheel moped or a light quadricycle, with manual or automatic transmission. You must state the vehicle type and transmission in the application or by the time you book the practical test; the exam vehicle must match the recorded choice. Before deciding, consider which vehicle you want to ride and ask the driving school for its exact specifications. An automatic-transmission test may result in code 78, restricting you to automatic vehicles.

The practical test checks control and safe behaviour on the chosen vehicle. Practise starting, braking, balance or manoeuvres as relevant to the vehicle, turning and riding in an appropriate setting with an instructor. A two-wheel moped requires different skills from a quadricycle, so do not prepare on a different type and assume the skills transfer automatically. Ask the office that runs your test about the route, protective equipment and paperwork: requirements and arrangements must match the category and vehicle you selected.

AM checklist

  • Check the age, documents and parent or guardian's signature if the candidate is a minor.
  • State your chosen vehicle and transmission by the time you book the practical test.
  • Practise on the same type of vehicle you will use for the test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the AM test on a light quadricycle?

Yes. MIT allows a two- or three-wheel moped or a light quadricycle, but you must specify the vehicle in your application and it must meet the requirements.

Can I carry a passenger at 14?

Only once you are 16 and if the vehicle is approved for two people, according to the MIT guidance.
