Which motorcycle is required for the A2 practical test?

The A2 test bike must meet the MIT’s minimum power and capacity requirements as well as its maximum limits.

For the A2 practical test, the MIT requires a motorcycle without a sidecar, at least 250 cc and at least 20 kW, with maximum power of 35 kW and additional power-to-weight conditions.

Minimum and maximum test-bike characteristics

The motorcycle used for the A2 practical test must be without a sidecar. The MIT lists a minimum capacity of 250 cc and rated power of at least 20 kW but no more than 35 kW. Its power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW/kg. For an electric motorcycle, the MIT page also gives a minimum ratio of 0.15 kW/kg. Capacity and power are separate requirements: meeting one does not make up for failing the other.

Capacity measures a combustion engine; power is measured in kilowatts; the ratio relates power to vehicle mass. Check that all figures belong to the exact motorcycle booked for the test and its approved configuration. The MIT provides a limited tolerance below the minimum capacity, but this is not a general exemption from the test requirements. Ask the office or driving school how that tolerance applies to the specific bike.

Do not confuse the test bike with an A2 road bike

Minimum test-bike requirements standardise the practical examination. They are not the same as the maximum limits for motorcycles you may ride after obtaining A2. For ordinary riding, the 35 kW ceiling, 0.2 kW/kg ratio and original-version restriction still apply. A bike suitable for the test should therefore be assessed separately from any motorcycle you plan to buy and ride with A2.

Before booking, compare the registration certificate and technical sheet for power, capacity and ratio, then confirm the declared transmission. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Can an 18 kW motorcycle be used for the A2 test?

No. The MIT lists a minimum test-bike power of 20 kW, in addition to the other requirements.

Is the 35 kW maximum the only test-bike limit?

No. Check minimum capacity, power-to-weight ratio, the absence of a sidecar and the specific requirements for electric motorcycles.
