Requirements
A2 licence: minimum age and motorcycle limits
You can obtain A2 from age 18. The motorcycle must meet power, power-to-weight and original-version limits.
In Italy, you can obtain an A2 licence from age 18. A motorcycle must not exceed 35 kW, its power-to-weight ratio must be no more than 0.2 kW/kg, and it cannot derive from a version with more than twice the A2 power ceiling.
Age and three technical checks
The minimum age for direct access to A2 is 18. Age alone does not make every motorcycle eligible: the category has cumulative technical limits. First, rated power must not exceed 35 kW. Second, the power-to-weight ratio must be no higher than 0.2 kW/kg. Third, the motorcycle cannot derive from a version producing more than twice the maximum A2 power. A motorcycle restricted to 35 kW may therefore still be excluded if its original version exceeded 70 kW.
These figures describe different things. Kilowatts measure power; kW/kg relates power to the vehicle’s mass. Engine capacity, measured in cc, is a separate measurement and does not replace either check. Consult the registration certificate and approved data for the exact version. For an electric motorcycle, use its official power and ratio values; do not look for a conventional engine capacity that does not apply.
Check a motorcycle before riding
Imagine a motorcycle recorded at 35 kW and 0.19 kW/kg. It meets the first two A2 limits, but you still need to check that its original version did not exceed 70 kW. A 30 kW bike is not automatically suitable if its power-to-weight ratio exceeds 0.2 kW/kg. Check every condition and the vehicle’s official classification rather than relying on one number. Any power restriction must be properly approved and recorded; an undocumented mechanical change does not by itself alter the legal classification.
The motorcycle used for an A2 practical test has separate minimum requirements from motorcycles you may ride after qualification. The MIT sets specific characteristics for the test vehicle. Before buying, hiring or booking, ask a driving school or motorisation office to check the exact documents. Frequently asked questions
Is 35 kW enough for an A2 motorcycle?
No. Check the 0.2 kW/kg ratio, the original-version power limit and the official vehicle records.
Does engine capacity determine whether a bike is A2?
No. Power, power-to-weight ratio and the original-version limit are key; displacement does not replace those checks.
