A2 licence by examination: application, documents and tests

The A2 examination route requires an application and a practical test; theory is required unless an MIT exemption applies. Holders of A1, B1, B or BE can take only the practical test.
Choose the correct route and prepare the application
To obtain A2 by examination, submit the TT2112 application at the motorisation office or through the Portale dell’Automobilista. The MIT lists identity documents, tax code or health card, proof of medical fitness and the required payments. Fees and procedures may change, so follow the current official page and your local office’s instructions. The application must also include the required technical details for the motorcycle used in the practical test and a copy of its registration certificate.
Before booking tests, check whether you need the theory exam. The MIT says holders of A1, B1, B or BE can obtain A2 or A by taking only the practical test. Other candidates follow the standard theory-and-practical route. Foreign licences, conversions and unusual cases may need a specific check; do not assume the exemption applies without confirmation from the motorisation office.
Tests and the examination motorcycle
Where theory is required, the learner’s permit is issued after passing it. The MIT page sets limits on the number of attempts and the time window for the theory and practical stages; check the current rules attached to your application, since appointment availability depends on the office. The A2 test motorcycle must meet the minimum characteristics for that examination. These differ from the general limits for motorcycles you can ride after obtaining A2: the test vehicle must have at least 20 kW and no more than 35 kW, as well as the required capacity and ratio.
Keep the application, receipts, medical certificate, identity document, tax code and motorcycle registration together.
