Can an A1 licence be used to ride a tricycle?

In Italy, A1 also covers three-wheelers with a maximum power of 15 kW, subject to the vehicle’s classification.

Yes. An Italian A1 licence includes three-wheel vehicles whose maximum power does not exceed 15 kW. Confirm that the vehicle is officially classified as a three-wheeler and that its registration data match the category.

A1 includes a limited three-wheel category

A1 is commonly associated with light motorcycles, but the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport also lists three-wheel vehicles with a maximum power of 15 kW. The legal category matters: a vehicle with three wheels is not automatically an A1 tricycle just because of its appearance. Its approval and registration documents determine how it is classified. A small car-like body, two front wheels or a single rear wheel do not by themselves establish which licence category applies.

Power is the figure relevant to the 15 kW ceiling in this rule. Do not confuse it with engine capacity, vehicle mass or the maximum mass that a vehicle can carry. For a combustion engine, displacement may appear on the registration certificate, but it does not replace the power check. For an electric vehicle, use the official rated-power data. If the certificate shows a different vehicle class, or you cannot identify the approved power, ask a driving school or the motorisation office before using the vehicle.

Check the documents, not just the shape

For example, a three-wheeler with a recorded maximum power of 14 kW may meet the A1 power ceiling, provided its official vehicle category and all other conditions are consistent. A visually similar model recorded at 16 kW exceeds the 15 kW ceiling. Neither example should be decided from a sales description alone: model variants can differ, and the relevant data are those for the specific registered vehicle.

This driving entitlement is distinct from the motorcycle required for the practical A1 test. The MIT publishes separate minimum characteristics for the test vehicle, so do not assume that any vehicle you may ride after obtaining A1 can be used for the examination. Frequently asked questions

Is every three-wheeler allowed with A1?

No. The MIT lists three-wheel vehicles up to 15 kW, and the exact official classification and registered power must be checked.

Does a three-wheeler’s engine size decide the A1 limit?

The stated ceiling is maximum power, up to 15 kW. Engine capacity and mass are different figures and do not replace that check.
