A1 practical test: minimum motorcycle requirements

An A1 test bike must have no sidecar, reach 90 km/h and meet the minimum capacity and power requirements.

For the A1 practical test, the MIT requires a motorcycle without a sidecar, with maximum power of 11 kW, at least 120 cc and a top speed of at least 90 km/h. A 5 cc tolerance below the minimum capacity applies.

Test-bike characteristics

The motorcycle used for the A1 practical test must meet the MIT’s minimum characteristics. It must have no sidecar, a maximum rated power of 11 kW, capacity of at least 120 cc and the ability to reach at least 90 km/h. The MIT allows a 5 cc tolerance below the minimum capacity, down to 115 cc. This tolerance applies to the test vehicle’s minimum capacity; it does not waive the ordinary limits for riding an A1 motorcycle.

Keep test requirements separate from the A1 riding limits. A motorcycle ridden with A1 must fall within the category limits, including maximum capacity of 125 cc, power no higher than 11 kW and a ratio no higher than 0.1 kW/kg. For the test, capacity has a minimum and the vehicle must also meet the speed threshold. The registration certificate should support the vehicle’s actual technical data.

Check before booking

A 125 cc motorcycle with 10 kW may meet the category maxima but still be unsuitable for the test if it cannot reach 90 km/h or misses another requirement. An electric motorcycle has no conventional engine capacity: ask the motorisation office how it assesses the test requirements for that specific case and provide official technical documents. Do not rely on a generic model description.

Before booking, make sure the motorcycle declared in the application is the one you will use and ask the driving school to check its technical sheet. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 115 cc motorcycle be accepted for the A1 test?

The MIT specifies a 5 cc tolerance below the 120 cc minimum for the test vehicle. Confirm the exact case and other requirements with the office.

Is staying below 11 kW enough?

No. The motorcycle must also meet the minimum capacity and speed, have no sidecar and satisfy other applicable conditions.
