A1 test on an automatic scooter: what code 78 means

An A1 test on an automatic scooter can lead to code 78, which limits you to automatic vehicles. Check this before booking.

If you take the A1 practical test on an automatic vehicle, code 78 may be added to your licence. It limits you to vehicles in the category with automatic transmission.

When code 78 applies

Code 78 records that the practical test was taken on a vehicle without a manual gearbox. It concerns the transmission; it does not change the A1 limits for engine size, power or power-to-weight ratio, and it does not ban scooters as a whole. The vehicle must still be approved for road use and fall within the A1 category.

Before booking, ask the driving school or the local licensing office which vehicle will be used and what restriction follows. For example, passing on an automatic 125 cc scooter does not let you later ride an A1 motorcycle with a manual gearbox: code 78 is the relevant restriction. The key detail is the transmission of the test vehicle, not whether it is called a scooter.

Choosing a test vehicle

If you want to ride motorcycles with a manual gearbox, check before the test whether you can use a compliant manual vehicle. The test vehicle has to meet several official requirements; the correct engine size alone is not enough. Confirm the controls and gearbox with the school or office before paying or arranging a booking.

If you intend to use only automatic scooters, the restriction may suit your needs. Before buying or borrowing a vehicle, compare its registration category and technical limits with A1 and check the code printed on your licence. If you later want code 78 removed, ask the licensing office about the procedure in force at that time; do not assume that an administrative request alone is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Does code 78 ban all motorcycles?

No. It limits you to automatic vehicles within the categories on your licence. The other A1 limits, including power and engine size, still apply.

Can I take the A1 test on a manual vehicle?

That depends on availability and the vehicle requirements for the test. Ask the driving school or licensing office before booking and confirm the code that will be recorded.
