Requirements
Category A licence: direct access at 24 or progression from A2
Direct access to category A starts at 24, or at 20 with an A2 licence held for at least two years.
In Italy, direct access to category A is available from age 24. You may also apply from 20 if you have held A2 for at least two years; the gradual route without an examination has its own course requirements.
Two routes to category A
Category A removes the power limit that applies to A2 motorcycles, but applicants must meet age and procedure requirements. The MIT lists direct access from age 24. Alternatively, from age 20 you may take the category A examination if you have held A2 for at least two years. Age alone is not enough: check the date your A2 category was issued and whether the licence remains valid.
There is also a gradual route without an examination, through a specific course at a driving school or authorised driving instruction centre. For category A, the MIT requires the applicant to be at least 20 and to have held A2 for at least two years. This is a separate process from applying for an examination and completing the required course. Do not confuse an examination route, which still includes a practical test, with the gradual training route.
Work out which route applies
If you are 24 and have not held A2 for two years, you can consider direct access by examination. If you are 21 and have held A2 for three years, the age and holding-period requirements may allow you to consider either the examination or gradual course. The office checks your eligibility and documents. An A1 or B licence does not replace the two-year A2 requirement for progression to category A.
Before enrolling, tell the driving school which category you hold and its issue date. Ask whether you want the examination route or a gradual course, then check the required documents and motorcycle. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise shared theory rules; category A still requires the MIT procedure and practical training.
