Level crossing: what to do when the red lights are on

Stop at a level crossing when the red lights or audible warning are active. Learn when to wait and when the tracks are clear.

If the red lights or audible warning at a level crossing are active, stop before the line even if you cannot see a train. Never cross while barriers are closed, lowering or rising. Wait until the warnings end and make sure you can clear the tracks without stopping.

Red lights: stop before the line

If the red lights flash, or you hear the warning signal, stop before the stop line. This applies even when the barrier has not yet come down or the train is not visible: it may be far away or hidden by a bend. Do not drive around a barrier or use the opposite lane.

At a crossing without barriers or half barriers, the Highway Code distinguishes crossings with warning devices from those without them. If the lights or audible warning are active, stop at the solid stop line. If there are no warning devices and the sign only requires you to give way, check that no train is in sight. If one is approaching, stop before the broken line.

Wait until the barriers are fully open

The train has passed, but the barriers are still rising? Wait. You must not enter while barriers are moving open: do not squeeze under them or start as soon as a gap appears. Another train may be approaching, or the warning system may activate again.

Set off only when the barriers are fully open, the warning lights and sounds have stopped, and the road beyond the tracks is clear. Cross without stopping. If a queue beyond the crossing would make you wait on the tracks, remain behind the line.

A simple example to remember

Imagine that you see the train moving away while the red lights are still flashing: wait. If the lights stop but the half barriers are still rising, keep waiting. Once the warning sequence has ended and you can continue beyond the tracks, cross steadily without stopping.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you practise questions about signs and level crossings. Connect each true-or-false answer to the real situation: the lights, the barriers and the space to exit.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review questions about road signs and level-crossing rules, then apply them to real situations: stop, wait for the full sequence and cross only when you can clear the tracks.
