Can a new driver use a parent’s car?

Yes, if the car meets the limits for your licence and the insurance terms cover your use; check these separately.

A new driver may use a parent’s car if it meets the vehicle limits applicable to that driver and the insurance cover allows that use. Check the registration number with the MIT service and ask the insurer about the policy terms.

Check the car first

Family ownership does not exempt a vehicle from new-driver restrictions. For a recently obtained B licence, the rule on vehicles considers power and power-to-tare ratio during the period set by law; M1 plug-in passenger cars also have a 105 kW ceiling. Enter the registration number in the MIT/Portale dell’Automobilista checker and verify that the car is allowed for your licence and date of qualification.

Do not rely only on the model name, engine displacement or the fact that a parent has driven the car without difficulty. Versions and powertrains can change the official figures, so check the exact registration number. If the car was recently registered or the result is unavailable, compare it with the vehicle registration certificate and ask the UMC before using it.

Check the insurance policy separately

Knowing the car is legally suitable does not show that every driver has identical insurance conditions. A policy can contain named-driver, experienced-driver or other restrictions; how they apply depends on the contract. Read the policy and ask the insurer or intermediary whether a new driver may use the car, whether the policy needs an update and what the consequences would be after a claim. Ask for an answer about the specific contract rather than relying on a general statement online.

Also confirm that the vehicle is insured and that the documents are available. The official vehicle-limit check and insurance-cover check are separate steps; complete both before the journey. For example, a car may meet the power limits while its policy requires the insurer to be told about a new driver. Do not assume that being related to the owner resolves the issue. Keep the insurer’s response or a copy of the updated policy with the vehicle documents so that the agreed terms are clear to the people sharing the car.

For category B theory, Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you study chapters, take exam quizzes, review incorrect answers and follow progress statistics. Check the registration number and insurance policy separately with the relevant official service and insurer.
