Where can you find a doctor authorised to certify driving fitness?

How to find a doctor authorised to conduct a driving-licence medical and check which process applies to you.

You can have the medical with an authorised local health authority medico-legal doctor, military doctor or private doctor approved by the MIT; your family doctor alone is not enough. The local medical commission (CML) is required for certain health conditions or higher licence categories.

Start with the right service

For a driving-licence medical, you need a doctor authorised under Article 119 of the Highway Code: this may be a local health authority medico-legal doctor, a military doctor or an authorised private doctor. Being your family doctor is not enough. On the MIT website, search for “Doctors authorised to assess physical and mental requirements” to find the eligible professionals and the situations that instead require a local medical commission.

When you call, explain whether this is a first licence, renewal or another procedure, which category you need, and whether you have been told to go through the local medical commission. Ask whether the visit takes place at the practice or requires regional booking, which documents are needed, whether photos or medical reports are required, how the certificate is sent and what payment is due. Do not reuse a certificate from another application without checking its validity and scope with the UMC.

When a different service is needed

Some health situations are assessed by the CML rather than an ordinary certifying doctor. If you already have a decision, restriction or request for reassessment, read the instructions and contact the relevant commission. The CML may request specific specialist tests; do not book a doctor at random, as it may be the wrong service and you might have to repeat the checks. Local services set the arrangements and timings, and booking may go through the regional health service.

The simplest way to keep track is to write down the professional's name, the service, the type of certificate and the instructions you received. Before paying, confirm that the result can be used by the UMC for your specific application. Bring ID and your health card, as well as any requested medical reports. The certificate records the assessment result; it does not replace the application, receipts or other attachments. If the Motorisation Office rejects it, ask for the specific reason and the correct procedure before booking another medical.

Questions to ask by phone

  • Are you authorised to issue the certificate required for my application?
  • Does my case require the local medical commission?
  • Which medical reports, photos and payments should I bring?
  • How will the certificate be sent to the Motorisation Office?
