Requirements
Can you drive agricultural machinery with category B?
Category B covers some agricultural machinery, subject to the applicable dimensions, mass limits and vehicle classification.
Category B may allow you to drive agricultural machinery that meets the characteristics permitted by law, including conditions on dimensions and mass. Check the machine’s classification and data: not every tractor or agricultural combination is automatically covered.
The answer depends on the machine
Category B is not blanket permission to drive any agricultural machine. MIT includes agricultural machinery among vehicles that may be driven with B in the cases provided by law; dimensional and mass limits and the machine’s classification still matter. A tractor, self-propelled agricultural machine and tractor-trailer combination may have different conditions.
Read the vehicle registration or circulation document to identify the machine category, dimensions and masses. Gross mass, towing mass and width are different figures; do not conclude that the machine is permitted merely from its power or because it is used on a farm. If it exceeds ordinary limits or is classified as exceptional, B may be insufficient. Check the required licence category and any road-use authorisations in that case.
Check public-road use too
The licence needed to drive a machine and the conditions for using it on a public road are related but separate checks. The vehicle must be registered under the applicable rules, meet insurance and inspection requirements where required, and be driven in accordance with signs and technical prescriptions. Agricultural use does not remove obligations when the machine travels on a road open to traffic.
Before moving a tractor between fields or to another site, confirm that your licence covers the machine and that transport and equipment requirements are met. If a trailer or implement is attached, consider the mass and dimensions of the whole combination and the documents for the equipment. For an old, modified or poorly documented machine, ask the UMC or a qualified technician before using it on a public road.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review category B rules through chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and progress statistics. Check the specific agricultural machine’s category and limits in its own documents.
Frequently asked questions
Does category B let me drive any agricultural tractor?
No. It depends on the machine’s classification and dimension and mass limits. Check its documents and the applicable category.
If I drive only on my own land, do I need no checks?
Private land use differs from public-road traffic. When you use a public road, the applicable requirements and obligations for the machine apply.
